Megan Walch Biography

Megan graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from the University of Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart 1989. She was the recipient of a Samstag Scholarship, 1994 and she completed a Master of Fine Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute, California, 1997. During her Masters Degree Megan was awarded a full scholarship to attend the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, held in rural Maine in the summer of 1996. During this nine week intensive residency, she had studio critiques with internationally acclaimed aritsts Anish Kapoor, Carroll Dunham, Tishan Tsu and Jessica Stockholder.

The award of a supplementary Samstag scholarship enabled Megan to continue to live in the United States. After completing her studies, she was accepted to The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation's Space Program in Manhattan. Referred to as the Space Program - this was a grant of a large studio for twelve months in Tribeca. Board members of the Space Program include Chuck Close, Janet Fish, Harriet Shorr, Philip Pearlstein. In 1999 Megan moved to a studio in Brooklyn. Megan worked as a studio assistant to artists Rackstraw Downes, Sue Williams and Carl Fudge, she taught painting at the renowned 92nd St Art Center. Megan attended Yaddo artist's colony in Saratoga Springs in the summer of 1999.

Megan’s work has been exhibited in the United States and Australia. Exhibitions include Primavera 2000 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Kindle and Swag - The Samstag Effect, curated by Ross Wolfe at the University of South Australia, 2004, and the exhibition Artists to Artists at Ace Gallery, New York. Megan participated in Wilderness - Balnaves Contemporary Painting curated by Wayne Tunnicliffe at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, 2010. In addition she was commissioned to produce a ten metre wall painting for the foyer of the AGNSW.

Megan has undertaken residencies in South East Asia. The first of these being in an Australia Council for the Arts studio at the Taipei National University for the Arts in 2002, and with Asialink at Khon Kaen University in North Eastern Thailand in 2004. In 2002 she was artist in residence in the Painting and Drawing Department of the Australian National University's Canberra School of Art. She has taught in the drawing departments of Monash University and the Victorian College of the Arts, she currently teaches in the Drawing Department at the School of Art, University of Tasmania and is a Phd Candidate at the university.
