Michael Lin orchestrates monumental painting installations that re-conceptualize and reconfigure public spaces. Transforming the institutional architecture of the public museum, his unconventional paintings invite visitors to reconsider their usual perception of those spaces, and to become an integral part of the work, giving meaning to its potential as an area for interaction, encounter, and re-creation.
Lin has a BFA degree from the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, Los Angeles, CA, U.S., and an MFA degree from ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, CA, U.S. Lin turns away from painting as an object of contemplation toward one of painting as a bounded, physical space, one we can settle into and inhabit.
Using patterns and designs appropriated from traditional Taiwanese textiles, his works have been exhibited in major institutions and international biennials around the world, including Macule, Southbank Center, Hayward Gallery, London, U.K. (2023); Pentachrome, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, U.S. (2022); Archipelago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto, Canada (2020); Mariposa B1-09, Jumex Museum, Mexico City, Mexico (2020); 24/7, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei, Taiwan (2019); Federation, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2017); Shanghai Biennial (2014); Art Basel Hong Kong (2014); Auckland Triennial (2013); Singapore Biennial (2011); Lyon Biennial (2009, 2005); Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (2009, 1999); Gwangju Biennial (2002); Asia Pacific Triennial (2002); Liverpool Biennial (2002); Venice Biennale (2001); Istanbul Biennial (2001); Taipei Biennial (2000), among others.
