PAE WHITE
b. 1963, United StatesPae White’s diverse practice is marked by works in various media, from sculpture and painting, to large-scale architectural installations, furniture and graphics. Characterised by an unconventional use of materials such as glass, marble, fabric, marzipan, marshmallows and vinyl, her playful explorations reflect a desire to create work beyond her personal skillset by collaborating with different artisans and industrial fabricators in the realisation of her ideas. Merging art, design, craft and architecture, White responds to materials and the site to create captivating works that challenge our perception and expectation of mediums and techniques.
Inspired by the idea of extruded text that was potentially moving from one plane to another possibly invisible plane, the work is simultaneously a play on string theory. In the years to follow, White utilised the string alphabet in a number of large-scale installations such as Too much night, Again (2013) and Command-Shift-4 (2015) to create dynamic volume that was both visible, yet physically fleeting and barely present at the same time.
The behaviour of the flocked alphabets in Unlost (2018) and Motherflocker Uppercase (2018) is intended to mirror that of her earlier string alphabets. Introducing a radical form of flocking, in which the work conjures the effect of flocked watercolour, the alphabets here “seem to pulse as though each letter was a musical note with a different tone”, emerging and dissolving.
