Finding inspiration in everyday objects and occurances, Rei Sato's paintings use photographs layered between whimsically drawn figures to create effervescent scenery. Her process involves taking pictures of her surrounds which she then transfers on the canvas, the addition of cartoon like characters amongst the urban scenery drawn from anime and manga. Playful and intuitive, Sato expresses her personal optimism, and her energy has captured the eye of international institution.
Sato's paintings were first discovered by Takashi Murikami, and she has since participated in exhibitions throughout the world, and join the atelier of Murikami, Kaikai Kiki. Born in 1984, Sato has recently participated in group exhibition in the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris and the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York.
