Sayan Chanda Biography

Sayan Chanda (b. 1989, Kolkata, India. Lives and works in London) deploys textile and ceramic techniques in an exploration of indigenous votive and ritual objects. Whether weaving, using found textiles or clay, Chanda creates ambiguous forms that, evocative of talismans, transcend everyday materiality. The pieces channel the artist’s past experiences and in referencing mythological traditions are imbued with majesty.

Chanda received his Bachelors in Textile Design from the National Institute of Design, India in 2013 and a MFA from University of Arts, London in 2021.

His work has been exhibited widely in group shows internationally, including: Cample Line, Scotland (2025); Crafts Council Gallery, London (2024); British Textile Biennial (2023); The Contemporary at Blue Star Galleries, Texas (2023); Commonage Projects, London (2022); Warbling Collective, London (2022); Saatchi Gallery, London (2021); South London Gallery, London (2021); Nature Morte, New Delhi (2021); Copeland Gallery, London (2021); Surface Gallery, Nottingham (2020); The Nehru Centre, London (2019); Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts, New Delhi (2019).
