Working with graphite on clayboard—a notably smooth, hard, and resistant surface—Simon Haas renders scenes of ordinary life with a quiet, meticulous, clarity. His subjects dwell in the everyday: a shower, a close-up of a man’s shoulder, or a shady, overgrown landscape. Alongside these, he depicts encounters of sexual intimacy and liberation, with a particular penchant for images of glory holes and anonymous spaces. Drawing from queer visual culture and personal experience, drawings embrace a straightforwardness that heightens their sensitivity to touch, texture, and the observed world.
Simon Haas (b. 1984, Santa Monica, CA) received a B.A. in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. He is one half of the artist duo The Haas Brothers. Together the brothers are known for sculptural works that blur the boundaries between art and design through furniture and objects that draw on themes of nature, fantasy, and humor. Works by The Haas Brothers are held in major public collections including the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the RISD Museum, Providence. Haas lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
