Ted May was born in 1939 in Ryde, Sydney and has lived in Melbourne for the best part of two decades. He began his exhibiting career with Gallery A in Sydney 1964 after graduating from East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School). Since that time he has had in excess of 30 solo exhibitions and has been included in a number of important awards including the Wynne, Dobell and Sulman Prize on numerous occasions.
May is represented in numerous private, university and public collections in Australia including the National Gallery of Victoria, Parliament house, Canberra, Heide MoMA, Melbourne and Art Gallery Ballarat
