Vahap Avşar was born in 1965 in Malatya, where he grew up until age 15. He started painting at the age of 10 and worked as a commercial painter from 1982 to 1985 in İzmir. He attended Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Fine Arts from 1985 to 1989. There he met Cengiz Çekil and worked as an assistant in his sculpture studio. Upon graduation, Avşar moved to Ankara to work as a research assistant and to attend Bilkent University Fine Arts Department, where he earned his Master’s degree and completed the course work for his Ph.D. Avşar settled down in New York after an artists’ residency program in 1995 and had a break from producing art. Avşar started making art again in early 2008.
