Woo Jong Duk gained international recognition for his Stage series featuring the vivid scene of the dance troupe. In 2003, he was the official photographer who was invited by Nacho Duato, the artistic director of the Spanish National Dance Company and a world-renowned dancer. He was also the only photographer who was exclusively allowed to photograph the performances of Pina Bausch (1949-2009), the founder of “Tanztheater” which was a new genre mixing dance and art, and the artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Those photographs were shown in his solo exhibition in Germany in 2007. The series were renowned for capturing eternity in a fleeting moment and delivering an impression that transcends time and space.
Woo believes the image of the stage represents his deepest mind and the art should expand into compassion for people. He made the viewers watch his artworks crossing the boundaries especially between dance and photography. As a photographer and an artist, he expresses his inner world of mind with his own vocabulary.
Besides the Stage series, Woo has worked on a series of photographs taking fellow artists, as well as some artistic photographs. From personal stories to discourses on contemporary art, his works range over various themes and were featured in publications and museum exhibitions.
