Yasi Alipour is an Iranian artist/writer/educator based in Brooklyn. Her tactile works on paper uses folding to explore mathematics as a language, with all the historical, social, political, mortal, and embodied ramifications any language holds. In her writing, research, and pedagogical approach, Alipour focuses on intergenerational conversations that happen through and within histories of erasure. She is a recipient of MHZ Foundation’s Critics of Color (2021/2022), Sharpe Walentas Studio Program Award (2019/2021), and the Triple Canopy Publication Intensive (2018). Her work has been exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally, including Artissima, Turin(2022), Bavan Gallery (solo, 2022, Iran), 12 Gates Gallery (solo, 2022, PHL), the Geary Contemporary (2021), Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (2020), Venice Biennale (2019, IT), Limiditi-Temporary Art Project (2018, MR), and Museum of Contemporary Art Vijdovina (2018, SR).
Alipour’s writing has appeared at the Brooklyn Rail, Spot Magazine, Asia Contemporary Art Week, Photograph Magazine, Volume One/Triple Canopy, and the Dear Dave. As the guest editor of the Brooklyn Rail’s Critic’s Page (November 2021), she has worked with Trinh T Minh-ha, Julie Mehretu, Dorothea Rockburne, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Carrie Moyer, m. NourbeSe Philips, among others. Her featured interviews include Okwui Okpokwasili, Gregg Bordowitz, Sanford Biggers, Yto Barrada, Hans Haacke, Mark Dion, Aliza Nisenbaum, Jane Benson, Kevin Beasley, and many more. Alipour holds an MFA from Columbia University and is a Faculty at Parsons, New School, Columbia University and SVA.
