Cao Fei (b. 1978 in Guangzhou, China) mixes social commentary, popular aesthetics, references to surrealism and documentary conventions in her films and installations. Her works reflect on the rapid and chaotic changes that are occurring in Chinese society today. She has participated in a number of international biennales and presented her projects at various prestigious galleries and museums around the world. Cao Fei’s projects in 2016 include her first retrospective at MoMA PS1 and BMW Art Car #18. She has received several awards and nominations for her work.

About the Artist

Cao Fei uses video, multimedia installations and photography to explore the effects of digital capitalism on the Chinese population, considering how loneliness manifests itself in a tech-driven world, how fantasy plays a key role in subcultures and how human relations are driven by rapid urban development.
