The genesis of the artwork, The Exception of History, started when I was searching for the legendary pyramid on the Cising Mountain (lit. ‘Seven Star Mountain’), and throughout the expedition, as the memories of the sensations inside and outside of my body accumulated and guided by various connective puncta, memory, history, and nature are explored through the artwork via temporal and realistically fictional construction of images.
To me, memory, history, and nature are forms of existence that are ‘difficult to get a thorough read of,’ and The Exception of History seeks to fabricate this state of being unable to ‘get a full read.’ Departing from a textual reading of the images, the visual records are presented in the form of a non-systematic database. The contents that several sections of the video are composed of are turned into ‘random’ horizontal mirror images using a computer program and then ‘reconstructed’ into constantly changing scenes, altering the direction and structure of the narrative. They are then made to attach to or interfere with each other or break into various forms, and then piecing together in this chaotic situation an exception of history, a setting that is both meaningful and meaningless is created. At the same time, the time that the images are reproduced through the random organisation of perceptions and programming is used to insinuate the time which is expounded by nature, while also expressing that memory and history, just like the progressing nature, are all existences that are ‘difficult to get a thorough read of.’
