Lenz Geerk's Moonpaintings at MASSIMODECARLO
By Rory Mitchell – 16 December 2022, Milan

As galleries start to wind down in December, it’s a joy to see Lenz Geerk‘s exhibition Moonpaintings (15 December 2022–28 January 2023) open at MASSIMODECARLO in Milan.

Figures rendered in earthy tones with soft edges recall Pablo Picasso‘s early period. We’re reminded of his painting The Soup (1903), which was featured in the exhibition Natureculture (13 June–21 September 2021) at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel last year.

Geerk’s paintings of the moon—a subject he has recently become obsessed with—are particularly remarkable. He said, ‘the moon has become such a kitsch thing that it is almost a bit embarrassing to paint it. If something is embarrassing, I love to paint that.’
