The celebrated painter Louise Bonnet and her partner, ceramicist Adam Silverman take over Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Hollyhock House in their first formal collaboration.
Sure to be on everyone’s Los Angeles itinerary, Entanglements (15 February–27 May 2023) presents Bonnet’s paintings and Silverman’s ceramics in the UNESCO World Heritage site, where they draw attention to the design and history of the century old house.
Bonnet’s move to L.A. in 1994 was set to be a short one year stint. Fresh out of an illustration and graphics degree from Geneva University of Art and Design, the Swiss artist met Silverman when she took a design job at his former streetwear company, X-Large.
Fast forward nearly 30 years, the couple are settled both in the city, as well in their respective artistic fields—Bonnet notably made a pivotal move from acrylic to oil paint in 2013 giving way to her characteristically fleshy and labile subjects, while Silverman shifted from fashion to pottery.
Hollyhock House has brought together an original display of work demonstrating the artistic dialogue between Bonnet and Silverman. Bonnet’s obscure, grotesque portraits respond to Silverman’s deeply textured ceramic sculptures, illuminating the estate’s intriguing design and emphasising Lloyd Wright’s defiant architectural style.
Promising to be one of the most unique exhibitions to catch alongside Frieze L.A., Entanglements delivers a crisp, contemporary perspective on the modernist institution of Hollyhock House.
