Some exceptional lots were up for auction at Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction on 27 April, and despite market uncertainties amid political tensions and a surge of new Covid-19 cases in the region, results were strong.
Among our favourite works, we spotted two atmospheric paintings by Liu Ye and Xinyi Cheng. Following her institutional solo exhibition at Lafayette Anticipations last month, the Sotheby’s sale marked Xinyi Cheng’s auction debut and set a new benchmark for the artist, with her painting Aperitif selling for US$562,054.
Louise Bourgeois’ Spider IV (1996/1997) was another highlight, with the steel version of this exact model present in Peter Bellamy’s iconic photograph of the artist embracing the sculpture.
