On view at Tarmak22—an art space overlooking the runways of Gstaad-Saanen Airport in the Swiss Alps—Hauser & Wirth presents drawings and sculptures by Louise Bourgeois.
Also showing online, The Heart Has Its Reasons, which opens 19 December 2020 and runs until 3 February 2021, reflects Bourgeois’ material investigations into her emotional and psychological life, with works spanning 1949 to 2009, a year before her death in 2010.
Among the highlights is a two-part hand-sewn fabric piece titled Night and Day (2007), depicting waves of warm colour against cool shades of blue in one frame, while the second image depicts the same undulating shapes in varying shades of grey.
Fabric held a significant role throughout Bourgeois’ practice, with the artist once noting: ‘I have always had the fear of being separated and abandoned. The sewing is my attempt to keep things together and make things whole’.
Bourgeois makes tangible shared human experiences, with this exhibition traversing themes including love, loss, and memory. The show runs in parallel to Louise Bourgeois. To Unravel a Torment at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal, with Louise Bourgeois, Freud’s Daughter opening at The Jewish Museum in New York in spring 2021.—[O]
