Press Release

1301SW presents Intimate Extremes, an exhibition of new paintings by Sydney-based artist Adrian Hobbs. Investigating the dynamic tension of pictorial oppositions, Hobbs navigates the implicit contradictions that characterise the practice of painting — surface and space, form and absence, motion and stillness, the singular and the multiple — while foregrounding the intimate links between these opposing positions.

Approached through a reduced visual language that is at once general and specific, the paintings resist containment, extending beyond the frame. Each work articulates an inherent sense of possibility: Intimate Extremes gestures toward future outcomes, approaching painting as a site of complexity and ongoing transformation — a space where meaning remains active, multifaceted, and open‑ended.
