AUNG KO

Having emigrated to France after the coup in Myanmar in 2021, Aung Ko has been forced to live a new life, integrate a new culture, meet new people and search for a new identity. His latest solo exhibition (Here and There) at A2Z ART GALLERY marks an ‘outropesctive’ progress by Aung Ko, drawing attention to the news and events that have unfolded around him. Having survived such traumas has had a dramatic impact not only on Aung Ko’s creative process, but also on his painting techniques and artistic style. In his latest exhibition, the artist seeks to recapture the moments and things happening around him. Inspired by the historical masters of painting, he uses gestural brushstrokes and a colour palette that references the revolutionary paintings of Goya and the expressive neo-figurative portraits of Freud. Moreover, (Here and There) also represents Aung Ko’s enduring bond with her native country. Despite the physical distance, Aung Ko constantly advocates a harmonious future for her homeland.
