We are happy to announce Xènia Fuentes' First Solo Exhibition at our gallery and the beginning of our collaboration with the artist. Working with self portraiture as a way to express her alter ego, in this series of work, Fuentes invites us to dig deeper into the fluid shapes of the feminine body and the empty spaces she inhabits. Discover the never-before-seen photographs at our Turó Park Gallery and meet the artist in what is to be her first major Solo Show.
'This series of images testifies the existence of the woman next door. A persona that in appearance seems like the artist. Undoubtedly, the body is the same; and the effusive gestures, for the most part too. And I say mostly, because the woman next door has particular gestures, which only belong to her. Like the swift way in which she pulls her hair. Or the singular capacity to expand her arms, waving colours. Or the insistent way she hides her face from us. The woman next door likes to wander through uninhabited, empty spaces. As if she needed to divest herself of everything accessory. To become light. She has her own entity and personality, and I have only tried to photo- graph her.'
Xènia Fuente's words on the exhibition January 2023
Xènia Fuentes (Barcelona, 1981) has focused her career around the research of the idea of duality. What happens when the same person is in front of and behind the camera? The one that is exposed and observed at the same time, the photographer and the model.
She establishes a dialog, a connection, between these two figures. As if with each im- age that she shoots, one tries to find the clue of the other. One tries to communicate with the other. Starting from an intimate photography, and using the self-portrait and the nude as genres, she explores her closest environment: home. Capturing the subtle changes that happen in the atmosphere; throughout the day, depending on the time of the year.
She uses her body and her feminity to play with light, shadows, colours... And thus create a particular universe, from which to offer a mistery, an emotion.
