Claudio Parmiggiani Biography

Claudio Parmiggiani was born in Luzzara, Italy. Over the past 40 years, the artist has been preoccupied with capturing the impressions of objects through dust, soot and smoke. His Delocazione series, inspired by the dust silhouettes of objects left leaning against a wall, leave subtle traces of a history of use. Parmiggiani creates these effects by burning tires, often filling entire rooms with smoke in order to render in negative space everyday objects. Evocative of photograms or the haunting casts of Rachel Whiteread, Parmiggiani’s works also reflect the influence of Poverist artists whose use of juxtaposition of everyday objects opposed the social and aesthetic norms of their day.
