Press Release

Galatea is pleased to announce Tania Ximena: In Pursuit of the Lichen, a solo exhibition by Mexican artist Tania Ximena (Hidalgo, Mexico, 1985), opening on August 20, from 6 to 9 pm, at Galatea Oscar Freire. Presented as part of the exchange program between Galatea and LLANO, the gallery that represents the artist in Mexico City, the exhibition brings together five new large-scale works, accompanied by a curatorial text by Miguel A. López, chief curator at Museo Universitario del Chopo.

The exhibition continues La Marcha del Líquen [The March of the Lichen], an interdisciplinary project that has unfolded through different presentations in Brazil. In 2025, the video installation of the same name was presented at the MASP Video Room, marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in the country. That same year, the diptych Ira en la laguna negra [Rage in the Black Lagoon], also stemming from this investigation, was featured in a pop-up exhibition organized by Galatea.

By investigating the effects of glacial melting and rising sea levels between Antarctica and the Gulf of Mexico, the project deepens a line of inquiry that runs through central concerns in Tania Ximena’s practice. Working across painting, video, photography, and installation, the artist explores the relationship between humanity and nature, understanding landscape as an active agent of transformation and reflecting on modes of coexistence in the face of climate change.

About the Gallery

Galatea is a gallery that emerges from the different and complementary trajectories and backgrounds of its founding partners: Antonia Bergamin worked for almost a decade as a managing partner of a major gallery in São Paulo; Conrado Mesquita is an art dealer and collector whose specialty is discovering great works in unlikely places; and Tomás Toledo is a curator who actively contributed to the historic institutional renovation of MASP, from which he recently left as chief curator.
