Galatea is pleased to announce Paulo Roberto Leal: maleabilidades construtivas [Constructive Malleabilities], an exhibition dedicated to the work of Paulo Roberto Leal (Rio de Janeiro, 1946 – 1991), opening on March 28, Saturday, from 11am to 3pm, at the gallery’s Padre João Manuel space. The exhibition brings together works from emblematic series such as Armagens, Armaduras and Entretelas, as well as paintings produced by the artist throughout the 1980s, in the final years of his practice before his premature death at the age of 46.
The exhibition, which features a critical text by curator Mayara Carvalho, highlights a central period in Leal’s production, in which the investigation of a ‘sensitive geometry,’ associated with Rio’s Neo-Concrete movement, becomes a guiding axis of his research, shaping a practice marked by procedures such as stitching, layering, and modulation.
Beginning his artistic trajectory in the late 1960s, alongside his work as an economist at the Central Bank, Leal developed a singular body of work grounded in formal rigor and the experimentation with unconventional materials. From the 1970s onward, he deepened his investigation into the plastic qualities of paper, fabric, and canvas itself, creating objects and compositions that challenge the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and installation.
Meanwhile, the Vilas series (1986), composed of paintings on handmade paper, coexists with a body of work that, in the early 1980s, marks the artist’s move toward larger-scale formats and vibrant blocks of colour—a phase that would become his last before his passing in 1991.

Paulo Roberto Leal (Rio de Janeiro, 1946 – Rio de Janeiro, 1991) worked primarily with painting while continuously experimenting with unconventional materials and supports throughout his career. He began his artistic practice in the late 1960s, alongside his work as an economist at the Central Bank of Brazil. From the early 1970s onward, he developed a body of work marked by formal rigor and an interest in the plastic qualities of paper, engaging in a self-taught investigation into the boundaries of painting and constructive visual language.

Galatea is a gallery that emerges from the different and complementary trajectories and backgrounds of its founding partners: Antonia Bergamin worked for almost a decade as a managing partner of a major gallery in São Paulo; Conrado Mesquita is an art dealer and collector whose specialty is discovering great works in unlikely places; and Tomás Toledo is a curator who actively contributed to the historic institutional renovation of MASP, from which he recently left as chief curator.
