Galeria Plan B is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Navid Nuur opening on the occasion of Gallery Weekend Berlin 2021.
The solo exhibition of Navid Nuur When meanings get marbled is a reflection on time and its relationship to matter. For the works exhibited, Nuur used various materials such as minerals, paint, marble, and even his own voice, each of the works preserving a special moment in time that was essential for the process of artistic creation. At the entrance to the exhibition, a work made of overlapped mirrors reminds the viewer that the world is perceived in layers. In this case, the tension between a common material (the mirror) and its new context set the tone for the following works in the exhibition, which also explore the distance between perception and reality. An important element in the exhibition is a 3.5 m high, 7.5 m wide redblueredblue (2021) painting, for which the artist's voice was recorded during the painting process, becoming an essential part of the installation. The experience of the painting, with its traces of red and blue paint, will be immersive in conjunction with the sensual sound. In an interview with Christine Macel for Flash Art, Navid Nuur mentioned about his 'redblueredblue' series of works: If you record sound, you can heart he past while looking at the present.
In an excerpt from the unedited e-mail of Navid Nuur sent to the gallery on August 2nd, 2020, the artist offers an introduction into the concept of the exhibition:
'I like the idea of even me not grasping fully the content, but letting matter guide me. Matter will be my body as sound, as minerals, as reflection, as movement, and its visibility by light or without light. Light is also heat, heat will illuminate the wall, more more heat can melt the minerals and turn some of them, together with my body, into vessels holding a cryptic content.The minerals will also be found in my daily life, in my surroundings and studio, the gallery, and more–all components gathered by my inner compass calibrated on intuition. Turning the vessels into silent objects which speak for themselves, they will have small objects inside them displayed as well, to guide you closer inwards the vessels. So no texts, no words or any explanation. They are complete as they are, like most of the works in the show will be. As sound of a word has alsothis quality, the same word in a different sound of tone means something else, therefore I will use my body when painting as a sound making instrument tuning in the vibration of colour, not focusing on composition, but on the texture and relationship between voice and colour and paint and movement. Vision needs no eyes to see, all is in flow–let's embrace this aspect within this collection of works. Let us even give some works a day-body and a night-body by storing light inside the work. Catching a moment in time, like when you make a marble. The body moves the paint, the paint then moves and shifts meaning, then suddenly caught in the moment on the surface and fixing it for ever. But what is fixed?'
Navid Nuur researches the way in which specific spaces and materials can engender new experiences, shifts in attention and perceptual thresholds. Having thoroughly digested the advancements of conceptual and post-conceptual art, Nuur's return to materials, crafts, to the innovations and affects they can occasion, is a critical and much as sensuous investigation of their role in a new kind of aesthetic experience. His work is an expansive sensorium, where the distances between magic and science, between speaking through objects or materials and speaking in critical jargon, between tactility and touch screens, the sleight of hand and the movement of electricity are enlighteningly compressed.
