Press Release

Cosmic Rational is Matthias Bitzer’s first solo exhibition in Mexico. This show presents a constellation of painting, installation, and collage that reflects upon the complexity of finding one’s place in our rapidly accelerating, refracting present.

The main protagonist of the exhibition is the ‘happy Eddie,’ a shape-shifting eel-like figure who —in Bitzer’s world— has the capacity to perpetually reconfigure, reconstruct, and camouflage itself by expanding, accordion-like, into the multimedia installation cosmic rational or compactly coiling itself into a luminous bull’s eye, as in his painting Eddie Spaghetti.

Parallel to his new paintings and installations, Bitzer will also present works from his ongoing series of collages entitled Phosphor notes. Unlike the imagery in his more figurative works, which have a cryptic yet timeless quality, the Phosphor notes possess a different kind of temporality: quick, rapid-fire snapshots of our time, which the artist further grapples with on a more abstract, embedded level in larger-scale works.

About the Artist

Matthias Bitzer’s work is poetic and enigmatic, as he resolves figurative painting with abstraction and ornamental geometries. His passion for literature, poetry, and science result in an optical network that connects gaps in our perception of time and space. His source of inspiration derives from a broad range of often forgotten historical figures, including Emily Dickinson.
