Galerie Urs Meile is pleased to present Atelier, Tobias Kaspar’s (*1984, Basel, Switzerland) first solo exhibition at the gallery’s Zurich location. Atelier brings together works that oscillate between photography, object, and installation, ranging from red sweater motifs to a monumental chandelier made of water bottles. The exhibition’s starting point was an H&M T-shirt bearing the word ATELIER – or was it perhaps Matisse’s iconic work L’Atelier Rouge? Kaspar employs these references to critically examine the myth of the studio, its romanticised aura, and the role of art within the creative industries.
Tobias Kaspar (lives and works in Riga and Zurich) explores the mechanisms of value production, taste, and desire within the art and fashion industries. His practice—spanning photography, object, and installation—examines how cultural meanings, styles, and myths, such as that of the artist’s studio, are produced and circulated. With subtle irony, Kaspar employs the logics of consumption and aesthetics to expose the entanglements of market forces, identity, and artistic aura.
