ShanghART M50 is delighted to present the art project The Immeasurable Everything at STOP SPACE by Sun Xun, which opens on 9 June and will run through 2 September. The project set up a Sun Xun “studio” especially to present Sun’s daily working process.
Launched in the winter of 2019, the STOP SPACE project was based on Sun Xun’s feature-length narrative animation Magic of Atlas. STOP SPACE is nearly a representation of the Sun’s animation where the virtual images run through the space and echo each other. The physical space will change along Sun’s future work in the space. STOP SPACE is a fragment of the animated world that falls into reality, which is also a parallel black hole where the audiences can travel through the world of Sun’s creation.
The Immeasurable Everything echoes with Sun Xun’s solo in ShanghART WestBund space An Infinite Journey in 2022, showcasing Sun Xun’s new animation works. Over the years, Sun Xun has devoted himself to breaking away from the traditional way of creating animated films and trying to incorporate a variety of artistic styles. He emphasises the significance of painting in animation and suggests that artworks should not be limited to a single medium as the imagery of reality. Different mediums promote the enlightenment and collision of artistic expression at different levels.
In 2022, Sun Xun’s solo exhibition An Infinite Journey presented the world in woodcuts of the six different painting mediums of the animation Magic of Atlas: Luo Cha. In the special project _The Immeasurable Everything, _in addition to new woodcuts from the world of “Luo Cha”, visitors will also get a glimpse of the works of ‘Jing Bang’, which is another world in the animation and take oil painting as the main medium. Designed by Sun, the works are distributed in the space, which breaks the habitual way of displaying the works, where audiences will enter a fantastic parallel world of the animation. During the exhibition, a special space will be set up in STOP SPACE as a temporary studio to showcase Sun Xun’s daily working process.
The works of Sun Xun are mainly drawing and/or short animation. Sun Xun also exhibits his individual cell drawings and other mixed media works, often times alongside his films. His series of small mixed media works, entitled Shock of Time (2006), challenged notions of time, history and narration and utilised media such as newspapers, books and other documentary material that served to highlight certain passages of history. 21 KE (2010) was produced 3 years after its commencement and mainly completed by use of pastel and fusain on canvas. It constructs an impressive world full of wonders all in black and white. Some Actions Which Haven’t Been Defined yet in the Revolution (2011) is made by woodblock printing—a technique that was an important tool during the Cultural Revolution. This printing technique was used as an primary means of communication to quickly convey information to the masses. Clown’s Revolution (2010), Beyond-ism (2010) and other such new works exhibit Sun Xun’s recent attempt and breakthrough in the use of Chinese ink painting in his work. Although it is difficult, there is no doubt that the works are a perfect blend of traditional and contemporary art.
