ANDREA GALVANI

The apple sculptures are based on extinct and rare varieties, drawing attention to biodiversity, cultural memory and the resilience of the natural world. Through these works, Galvani reflects on the relationship between humans and nature, and on the ways in which species, landscapes and knowledge are shaped over time. The butterflies and rocks introduce another sense of duration. The short lifespan of a butterfly is set against the immense timescale of geological formations, bringing together two very different measures of time within the same space.

The neon works approach language and ideas through light. By turning words and concepts into physical forms, they explore the space between what can be seen and what remains beyond perception, as well as between the physical and the intangible. Throughout the exhibition, art and science come together as different but connected ways of investigating the world.

By placing these works alongside one another, Galvani draws attention to the different scales and forms through which we understand nature, time and our place within the world. The exhibition offers a moment to consider how these seemingly distant forms of life and matter are connected, and how our own existence is part of a much larger and constantly changing system.
