Studies in Perception brings together a group of artists whose practices examine how meaning is shaped through acts of looking, making, and interpreting. Across painting, photography, and mixed media, Thomas Wachholz, Marco Zumbe, Nonzuzo Gxekwa, Karla Nixon, Amy Rusch, Kuba Freter, and Sahlah Davids explore perception not as a fixed experience, but as something fluid, as something formed through material, memory, and context.
Surface plays a central role throughout this online exclusive exhibition. Wachholz and Zumbe approach abstraction as a perceptual exercise, where colour, rhythm, and repetition invite sustained attention. Their works reward sensitivity to subtle shifts in tone and structure. In dialogue with this, Freter and Rusch construct layered visual fields that hover between figuration and abstraction, suggesting fragments of narrative without resolving them.
Questions of presence, identity, and visibility emerge strongly in the photographic and figurative works of Gxekwa, Nixon, and Davids. Each artist considers how the subject is seen, framed, or obscured, whether through intimate portraiture, performative gestures, or carefully staged compositions. Their practices foreground perception as a socially charged act, shaped by power, proximity, and lived experience.
Together, the artists in Studies in Perception propose viewing as an active, interpretive process rather than a passive one. The works gathered here ask how we read images, how we assign meaning to form, and how attention itself becomes a critical tool. In bringing these practices into conversation, the exhibition highlights the richness and complexity that can emerge through careful observation, material sensitivity, and conceptual clarity.
