For South South Veza, TKG+ is pleased to present the works made in 2020 by Sawangwongse Yawnghwe and Chen Ching-Yuan. The artists project their senses and memories toward sutures in the social systems in which they reside, exposing critical coordinates within the poetic bounds of contemporary art.
Sawangwongse Yawnghwe (b. 1971) was born in Shan State, Burma. His grandfather, Sao Shwe Thaik, was Burma's first president after the country gained independence from Britain in 1948. His painting and installation practice engages in politics with reference to his family history as well as current and historical events in his country. Family photographs also provide the basis for a pictorial language through which he explores events in the country, suggesting that existing and available archives cannot reveal a nation's entire truth. His latest work on view in South South Vesa combines the phrases from his father's notes with a new form of composition. For instance, in X22 (KMT evacuation, 1953), the images and phrases blend in with the hazy background, becoming a poetic manifestation of radical immaterialism and pure philosophy.
Chen Ching-Yuan attempts to capture through his painting the subtle sensibility that weaves through literature, mythology, and history in different cultural contexts. In 2020, Chen Ching-Yuan spent six months in an artist residency in Paris, during which the Covid-19 outbreak forced a four-month city lockdown, with restrictions on everyday outdoor activities. It is during this period that the artist turned his gaze toward curious scenes that unfolded as people kept their physical distance. For this year's South South Veza, we present three works of Chen that were made during this peculiar time.
