White Cube Seoul presents an exhibition of works by Lebanese artist Etel Adnan (1925–2021) and South Korean artist Seundja Rhee (1918–2009). Shaped by parallel journeys across continents that led them both to Paris, Adnan and Rhee each forged distinctive visual languages born from experiences of displacement and transition.
Both artists came to art in their thirties, developing practices informed by abstraction, the legacy of artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, and the era’s expanding fascination with space exploration. Their sustained engagement with philosophical ideas and the cosmic finds expression in recurring motifs that anchor their respective vocabularies: Adnan’s suns, moons and the silhouette of Mount Tamalpais, and Rhee’s geometric forms symbolising the cosmos.
