The Whitestone Gallery Beijing is honoured to present Sachiko Kamiki's (b.1991) solo exhibition Parody from Jan. 20th to Feb. 24th, 2024. Marking her first solo show in Beijing, this exhibition unveils her latest series of works.
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the global atmosphere took a somber turn, prompting artists to embrace vivid colours in their works.
'Before the pandemic, art was satirical, and reality existed as an optimistic fantasy. After the pandemic, the real world took on a satirical tone, inspiring me to spread positivity through art. I persist in using characters as my creative theme, and in this exhibition, I intentionally bring art closer to the audience through easily understood symbols.' – Sachiko Kamiki
This showcase employs highly recognisable symbolic characters and objects, including Monroe, ballerinas, Alice, Haribo, etc., aiming to demystify the challenge of 'what is being depicted' in the contemporary art context through a symbolic painting language. This approach facilitates easier entry into the contemporary art world for the audience and diminishes aversions resulting from a lack of understanding about contemporary art contexts. Kamiki aspires to assist audiences in embracing the contemporary art world through engaging content and vibrant colours.
Born in Tokyo, studied at Joshibi University of Art and Design (Oil painting course), and got M.F.A in 2017 with 'Fukuko Okubo Prize' (honourable mention from the University). In the same year, her debut solo exhibition was held at Karuizawa New Art Museum. In this regard, the prestigious monthly art magazine 'Bijyutsutecho' (September Issue: 2017) ran an article about her interview. In 2018, her first solo exhibition in Tokyo was held at Whitestone Ginza New Gallery with favourable reviews. In the following year, her work graced the cover of 'Monthly Gallery', new year's issue. In commemoration of the 85th Anniversary of Tokyu Department head store, her solo exhibition was held at Tokyu Department head store art gallery, ended up with "sold out" show. In 2020, the solo exhibition TETRAD was held at Whitestone Gallery Taipei. Kamiki's works ask the viewers about the modality of human beings and modern society through symbolic metaphors. They are characterised by her broad perspective reflecting the rich literary background and contradistinctive simultaneously harmonious colouration. In 2023, her solo show Box was held in N Art gallery, Tokyo. It presented her new series of works that she created after COVID. She often uses rich colour and humorous themes as creative elements for hoping to provide people with more spiritual encouragement and happiness through art.
