Through her diverse practice Adriana Varejão presents incisive reflections on the complex nature of Brazilian history, memory, and culture. Her oeuvre encompasses painting, sculpture, and photography that draw upon aesthetic traditions and a visual legacy of transnational exchange, imperial and otherwise, to create a confluence of forms that she ultimately conceives as a metaphor for the modern world.
Adriana Varejão lives and works in São Paulo. Recent solo shows include: Museum of Modern Art in Salvador; Tamayo Museum (Mexico City); Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo; Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro; Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires; Fondation Cartier pour L’Art Contemporain (Paris); Hara Museum (Tokyo); Belém Cultural Center (Lisbon); Bildmuseet (Umea, Sweden). Her group exhibitions include the Venice, São Paulo, and Sidney Biennales; Weather, MoMA, New York; ARS 06, KIASMA, Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool, UK Body and Soul, Guggenhein. Her work is present in collections such as Tate Modern in London, Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Hara Museum, Tokyo, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Stedelijik Museum, Amsterdam, Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo and Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro; among others.
