Adriana Varejão‘s spectacular show at Pinacoteca de São Paulo, curated by the institution’s curator Jochen Volz, gathers more than 60 of the artist’s works made between 1985 and 2022.
Varejão has a unique and visceral approach to painting and sculpture, drawing on the motifs and artistic traditions from across Mexican history, dating back to the pre-Columbian era.
Last year, Ocula Advisory’s Rory Mitchell sat down with the artist on the opening of her solo show at Gagosian in New York to speak about everything from Mexican Talavera pottery to the importance of physicality, and the influence of cities such as São Paulo on her practice.
