Brendan Huntley Biography

Brendan Huntley principally explores what it is to be human by infusing inanimate objects with lifelike sensibilities. In his recent practice Brendan has produced a prolific assortment of upside down jugs, teacups, gravy boats, dinner glasses and other homely vessels. By twisting the traditional techniques of ceramic sculpture, Brendan lets the clay speak for itself or on its behalf, exploring what it is to be imperfect, mundane, fearful, lustful, joyous and soulful.

Sydney Contemporary Wrap Ocula Feature Sydney Contemporary Wrap By Jane O'Sullivan, Sydney

A marble bench sat out of the front of the Pearl Lam Galleries stand at the Sydney Contemporary art fair last week. Inscribed with Chinese characters, and without a card stating the artist or artwork title, many visitors simply passed it by. Those who could read the inscription, and those who asked, found out it said: Don’t put too much...

Great Expectations: Emerging Australian Art Ocula Feature Great Expectations: Emerging Australian Art By Stella Rosa McDonald, Sydney

In literary criticism, the term Bildungsroman refers to a coming of age novel. The protagonist learns a lesson, undergoes a transformation and grows up. They are stories where sentiment conflicts with authority, and we love them because they question our foundations and because we were all kids, once. ‘Emerging’ is the art...

Brendan Huntley emerges from a spring-green coastal backyard, dressed in an orange puffer jacket. The garden goes down towards a large, tidy shed at the back where the artist has set up an enviable studio. In one room there is an industrial gas-fired kiln, complete with a set of tracks for a trolley.

Brendan Huntley has two art studios. One where he lives in Melbourne's inner-north; that's where he does most of his painting. Then there's another way down south in Frankston, at his mother's rambling house where he grew up, surrounded by bush and birds.
