BÙI THANH TÂM
VietnamBùi Thanh Tâm was born in 1979 in Vietnam. He graduated in 2009 from Vietnam Fine Art University in Hanoi, where he lives and works. His paintings represent his observations of the decline in respect and awareness of traditional culture amongst Vietnamese youth, who are increasingly turning to western culture in rejection of their own. Bui Thanh Tam walks a fine line of satire and despondence. In the later works of his Crazy People series, the characters in his paintings seem to be enjoying themselves in their various leisurely activities. However, in many works the greyness of their complexions contrast the pop colours of the objects that surround and adorn them. The trinkets of decadence appear harmless, but they have drained the life of their young believers.
Bùi Thanh Tâm has participated in numerous group exhibitions, as well as two solo exhibitions at Craig Thomas Gallery in Ho Chi Minh City, and Viet Art Centre in Hanoi. Bui Thanh Tam has won various awards including the Prize of Vietnam Fine Arts Association in the Vietnam National Young Artists Festival in 2011, and fourth prize for the National Fine Arts Exhibition at the Vietnam exhibition Center of Culture and Arts in 2010.
