Dinh Quan was born in the coastal city of Haiphong, North Vietnam, in 1964. In 1990 Dinh Quan graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts College, where he had studied lacquer painting. Dinh Quan is today recognised as one of Vietnam’s most important lacquer artists. Through his development of the art form he has adapted the medium to include alternative techniques and other art disciplines such as sculpture.
The earlier focus of his lacquer paintings has been the female, which he often depicts in a refined, surrealist style. His ghostlike women sometimes seem sensual or deconstructed at times. In his recent works questions of subjects and viewpoints undergo subtle inflections toward their material, spatial and historical dimensions. Though his dialogue is not overtly political, he has seamlessly moved from the surreal to the everyday with an open-ended conclusion. Whether autobiographical or drawn from the lives around him, he continues to focus on relationships, always keeping the current socio-political situation of Vietnam in mind. Dinh Quan has experimented with innovative approaches to the traditional art of lacquer painting and invented a unique and dynamic style variation to the traditional technique.
Dinh Quan has exhibited extensively internationally, including in China (1994, 2010), Japan (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000), France (1996), Singapore (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002), Norway (1997), Philippines (1997, 1999), Hong Kong (1998, 2001), USA (1997, 1998, 2000, 2005), UK (1999, 2002), Thailand - Thavibu Gallery (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2011), Taiwan (2000), Malaysia (2001, 2002), Luxembourg (2002), Belgium (2002), Italy (2007), and Korea (2008). His works are in the museum collections of the Singapore Art Museum, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia.
