HAN SAI POR
b. 1943, SingaporeArguably one of Singapore’s most established sculptors, Han Sai Por’s works focus on nature and the environment. At 71, Han is a formidable artistic figure and in her 50 years of practice has shaped her aesthetic language of understated, geometric and organic forms. Her marble sculptures appear pliant, making for instantly recognisable works that speak of her years of experience.
Collaborating with the workshop team at STPI, Han reinvigorated her creative approach with new material possibilities in the in-house paper mill. Exchanging her signature stone and marble medium for softer and more flexible paper pulp, Han stretched paper’s potential to possess volume and textures. Her tactile 3-dimensional pieces are reminiscent of tropical flora and fauna, highlighting her sculptural sensibilities. Han has won international acclaim with her sculptures and was awarded the Singapore Cultural Medallion in 1995 and the top praise winner of the 11th Triennale India in 2005, as well as the Award winner of “The Leonardo Award for Sculpture” Chianciano Art Biennale, Italy in 2015, to name a few. She attended art courses at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in the mid 1970s, furthering her studies at East Ham College of Art and the Wolverhampton College of Art in the UK.
Her sculptures can be found across various locations in Singapore such as at the Istana, Changi Airport, the Esplanade, and are featured prominently abroad at the Singapore offices of the World United Nation, New York and the Singaporean Embassy in Washington D.C.
