Self-described interdisciplinary painter, Hugo Koha Lindsay lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand. His works are minimally abstract; he is unafraid to embrace an unprimed, raw canvas, or crumpled scraps of discarded fabric, and he often leaves behind traces of the studio floor. The spray painted strokes that sweep the canvases are gestural and raw, with a seemingly no holds barred approach that contradicts the crisp and defined areas of contrasting colour. Lindsay’s works are like working drawings, the layers are evident under paint and texture; nothing is hidden but each element adds up to a cohesive whole.
Lindsay holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland, following the completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design (2009 - 2012). He has acquired numerous awards and notable recognition including the prestigious Kaipara Wallace Arts Trust Award (2015). His first major award was the Francis Erwin Hunt Scholarship (2011), followed by the Walker and Hall, Zinni Douglas Merit Award (2014), Parkin Drawing Prize (2015), and the Molly Morpeth Canaday: Painting and Drawing Award (2016). In 2017, he was awarded a Merit Award for his submission for the Parkin Drawing Prize. Lindsay has exhibited across New Zealand and more recently in Australia. He has works held in the Tattersfeld Collection, the James Wallace Arts Trust Collection and private collections throughout Australasia.
Hugo Koha Lindsay joined the stable of Gow Langsford Gallery artists in 2017.
