Born in 1973 in China and moved to the US at age 18. Juju Sun has now relocated back to Beijing, feeling her roots are important. She currently lives and works in Beijing, China and New York, USA.
Received Art Education through the Art Students’ League of New York and the Ottawa School of Art; studied under the artist Larry Poons.
She was raised as a son by her father and has decided to not get married or have children. She prides herself on being independent, energetic, and free thinking in her life and her work and is a member of the Asian American Women Artists Alliance.
Most of Juju Sun’s works are abstract oil paintings. Her earlier works were based on figural abstraction, later her works focused more on blocks/sections of color. Most recent works have strong color backgrounds with lines visible over them to signify an influence of Chinese characters and positive/negative space.
Juju Sun encourages free interpretation of her work but doesn’t want her pieces to be limited to being compared to a pond, which happens frequently because of her color choices.
She does not think that her works come directly from her life experience, and while she does not relate strongly to feminism she does say her works reflect women’s vitality.
Juju Sun’s works have been shown and collected in China, USA, Italy, and Canada.
