JUSTIN BOWER

Justin Bower Biography

“I saw the meaning in figurative painting but the exhilaration of abstract expressionism really excites me too. So, I aim to put those two together in a meaningful way, that is timely.”

Justin Bower’s artwork explores the notion of identity in a post-human society. In a culture where technology is displacing religious belief systems, Bower’s futuristic paintings depict pixelated portraits with emotionless expressions. The figures portrayed become an armature for Bower to explore the human condition in a technological society. How do we define ourselves in this virtual and digital age? Is it even possible to have a fixed identity in this ever-changing technological world? It is questions like these which motivate and define Bower’s artwork.

The style of Bower’s work can be seen as a contemporary fusion between the naturalism and proportion of Renaissance art, mixed with the painterly strokes of Abstract Expressionism. Bower’s readily sites both Willem de Kooning and Leonardo da Vinci as his key influences.
