Jutta Koether Biography

Born in 1958 in Cologne, Germany.Lives and works in Berlin, Germany, and New York, USA.

Jutta Koether is a painter, musician, and theorist whosepractice is characterized by a deep engagement with painting in relationto other cultural forms. She began her career in Cologne in the early1980s, where she was involved in the city’s vibrant art and music scenesand contributed to the influential magazine Spex, writingcritical texts that positioned her within the intellectualcounterculture of the period. In a neo-expressionist scene mostlydominated by male figures, such as Martin Kippenberger, Koether carvedout a distinct position, using painting as a critical tool to challengeboth its authority and the gendered assumptions embedded within it.

In 2025, she was granted the Helen Frankenthaler Award for Painting by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

In2018, the first in-depth survey dedicated to Koether’s work wasorganized by the Museum Brandhorst, Munich, and Mudam Luxembourg – Muséed’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean.
