Laura Wills is an Adelaide based multidisciplinary artist. Her diverse practice encompasses drawing, painting, installation, media arts and performance. Wills employs contemporary art to explore social and environmental themes through the innovative use of found materials, collaborative processes and community-based projects. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Applied Design from Adelaide Centre of the Arts (2003), and Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours, from South Australian School of Art (2011). Since 2004, she has exhibited nationally and internationally as well as participating in several Australian and international residencies.
In 2012, Wills undertook a collaborative residency with her partner William Cheesman to Bundanon Trust, NSW. This project involved a ten-day bicycle tour to Bundanon informing new ideas and artistic development around survival, shelter, transportation and food. Wills’ latest body of map drawing was exhibited with Hill Smith Gallery at the 2012 Melbourne Art Fair, exploring themes of transformation, belonging to environment and a sense of enchantment.
‘Based within an expanded concept of art my practice takes a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration, ethics and participation. I am interested in the social context of art and ecological art projects. Themes I explore in my work include investigations of travel, shelter, “nomadism”, time, DIY culture, spirituality, mapping and food issues. My drawing works comprise of pastel and digital drawing, drawing in installation and light drawing with a projector for live performances. I am interested in traversing the boundaries of drawing to create hybrid works that are social and political in nature. My pastel works are predominately drawn onto maps that I find, or are donated to me. Over the years I have continued to work with maps to explore my interest of environment, travel and personal geographies. Maps are an ideal canvas for me, as they conjure associations with the landscape; where are we in it and how do we represent it?’ – Laura Wills 2015
