Liu Xinyi is an artist based in Beijing. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Sculpture Department, China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and his Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths in London. Liu works on various medium including installation, moving & still image and context-specific project.
Liu Xinyi is interested in how individuals understand and respond to the technicalization of politics. He starts from verifying widely accepted political common sense and later develops in tracking the communication of ideologies in the transnational public sphere represented by satellite TV, commercial films, online encyclopedias and social media. In recent years, he starts his search for social spaces in reality with attention to the social construction of Chinese body, from which he traces of the underlying technologies that continue to build modern governance. Liu seeks to identify historical existence of the policing strategies and population management within urban public utilities, to study their multiplex coordination with today’s political imagination.

His works have been featured in group exhibitions at Hyundai Motor Studio, Beijing, OCAT Shanghai, Shanghai, Qiao Space & Tank Shanghai Project Space, Shanghai, Busan Biennale 2016, Busan, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, CAFA Art Museum, Beijing, OCAT Xi’an, Xi’an, Yuz Museum, Jakarta and Ullens Center of Contemporary Art, Beijing. He was nominated for the list of candidates of the Young Artist of the Year of the 11th Award of Art China (2017), his was also one of the shortlisted artists for the 4th Art Sanya Huayu Youth Award (2015).
