Luca Lee Frei Biography

Luca Lee Frei has been known for conceiving sculptures, installations, exhibition displays and spatial designs that invite public participation and dialogue, often in response to a specific context. His work undermines the boundaries between fine and applied arts and design, bringing together different art forms such as handicraft, sculpture, installation, performance, as well as exhibition display and graphic design.

Luca Lee Frei, born 1976 in Lugano, Switzerland, lives and works in Malmö, Sweden. Lee Frei holds a Bachelor’s degree in Drawing & Painting from the Edinburgh College of Art, and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Malmö Art Academy. Frei is Associate Professor of Basic Studies at the School of Visual Arts and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Lee Frei has had solo shows at Malmö Konsthall; Kunsthaus Glarus; the Bonner Kunstverein; and the Lunds Konsthall. Exhibition designs include Tensta Konsthall, Malmö Konstmuseum, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, CentroCentro Madrid, Malmö Konsthall; Azkuna Zentroa Bilbao; Tate Liverpool; M HKA, Antwerp; The Drawing Room, London; and Nottingham Contemporary.He participated in group exhibitions at The National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto; Bildmuseet Umeå; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, along with participation in biennials such as the Cairo Biennial; the Prague Biennial; and the Istanbul Biennial
