Maria-Anna Dewes Biography

Maria Anna Dewes’ sculptural work uses figuration as a mean to address political, sociological and cultural issues. The female figure is central to her work. Dewes, casts positives and negatives of the body, sometimes whole, sometimes in parts like limbs or seemingly autonomous feet and arms that hold a broom or a gun. Another recurring figure throughout her work is that of the dog. Laying down on mirrored surfaces or sketched in watercolor, its presence comes time and again. Often playing with the repetition of figures in groups or in sculptural relief sequences, she creates situations and narratives that occupy space and bring sculpture up to speed with our contemporary moment.
