NARELLE JUBELIN

b. 1960, Australia
Narelle Jubelin Biography

Narelle Jubelin is an Australian artist known for her petit-point interpretations of archival photographs. Jubelin’s practice is research based with works that explore issues within Australian history and culture whilst also relating to her experience living in Spain. Narelle Jubelin lives and works in Madrid.

Her process of creation can be painstakingly slow as detailed works are rendered through single-thread petit point. Jubelin creates colour renditions of mostly black and white photographs and takes considerable care with framing her works and in doing so, unashamedly brings attention to the disorganised reverse of the sewings. Jubelin’s miniature works emphasise the large histories that can be contained within such small, detailed pieces of art.

Jubelin was one of the co-founders of the longest running artist run initiative in Australia, Firstdraft Gallery, Sydney, from 1985 to 1987. The artist’s recent solo exhibitions have included Flamenca Primitiva at The Commercial Gallery, Sydney (2016); Specific Objects, Common Parts at Marlborough Contemporary, London (2013); Vision in Motion at the Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne (2012); and Cannibal Tours at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne (2009). Narelle Jubelin’s work can be found in collections throughout Australia and internationally including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and Albertina Print Museum, Vienna.
