Nashun Nashunbatu is painter of Mongolian descent, currently based in Frankfurt and Beijing. His work reflects the international position that he occupies, moving effortlessly between Eastern and Western styles in his dark and evocative landscapes. Influenced by the dramatic natural scenescapes of Inner Mongolia, Nashunbatu's canvases employ techniques from both traditional oil painting and ink painting. Thick impasto brushwork animates the foreground of his paintings, while subtle washes of colour anchor his works in an oriental tradition. Isolated figures often break the expanse of plain and rolling thunder clouds, recalling the Romantic works of Friedrich, or the tranquil compositions of Chinese landscape painting.
