****Dream it! Believe it! Make it lucky!
Olivia You translates the human desire for luck and happiness into a bright, intuitive visual language, while exploring the uncertainty of life that lies beneath it. Her paintings bring together hearts, stars, smiling faces, swans, light and disco balls, universal symbols associated with love, happiness, expectation and luck. Drawn from popular culture and everyday life, these familiar images are moved into the pictorial space and recombined, creating scenes where personal emotion and universal desire intersect. At the core of her work is not any particular object or icon, but the way people desire happiness and luck, and the attitude of sustaining that expectation within an uncertain reality.
Each image functions as both an independent symbol and part of a shared visual vocabulary. The disco ball breaks a single light into many reflections, suggesting that happiness is not one fixed form but something sensed momentarily through love, relationships, memory, achievement and expectation. The slot machine, which appears in some works, addresses chance and choice: the decision to begin is one’s own, but the outcome cannot be controlled.
Radiating compositions and intense colour extend outward from the centre of the canvas, giving motion to still images and visualising emotion and desire in continual expansion. Yet the brightness of her paintings is distinct from simple optimism. Behind it lies the gap between expectation and reality: love does not always last, choices do not necessarily lead to the desired outcome, and luck cannot be obtained by will alone. In her work, “Lucky” encompasses not only a fortunate result, but the attitude of forming expectations again and moving toward the next moment amid failure and loss. “Life always leaves a small gap somewhere,” the artist writes, “and even amid pain, hope stubbornly pushes through that gap and blooms.”
