Born in Melbourne in 1943, Jacks studied both sculpture and painting at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, before relocating to Canada and the United States where he participated in the conceptually driven and minimalist art movements that would shape his artistic career.

In 2006 Jacks was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), and in 2001 The Bendigo Art Gallery established the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize which highlights contemporary drawing practice in Australia. Jacks is represented in national and international collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, The Art Gallery of New South Wales, The National Gallery of Victoria, The New York University, The British Museum, Wadsworth Athenaeum, and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
