TERRY WINTERS
b. 1949, United StatesTerry Winters' work is strongly grounded in a modernist sensibility. His early works feature a monochromatic palette, while his later works draw on botanical studies, medical photographs and architectural drawings. Winters' paintings give a diagramatic rather than literal rendition of his subject and are often composed of repeated units and forms, stressing the underlying structure of his works. His works are also characterised by their strong graphic quality biomorphic forms.
His interest in architectural space has lead to a recent collaboration with Rem Koolhaus, 2001, at Lehmann Maupin Gallery. A survey of his prints was also made in 2001 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Born in Brooklyn in 1949, Winters received a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1971. He now splits his time between Tribeca and rural Columbia County in upstate New York.
